Katie Krause

When I was first encouraged to be an interior designer, it was suggested in a condescending tone. My high school art teacher asked me why I made art, I didn’t have a better answer other than “it looks good”.  She told me “if you just want to create art that just looks good, bake a cake, or become an interior designer.”  That experience drove me to prove her wrong and would start my interest in lighting design. Maybe that’s just what she had planned.

To answer her question again years later I would say, I design because I want to craft transformative spaces that allow others to experience the atmosphere in an enchanting and functional way. By optimizing utility and the human perception of light and space, I aspire to evoke emotion through harmonious and strategic design strategies.

Do you think I could fit that on a cake?

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Interior designers use creativity, technical knowledge, and aesthetics to create solutions that improve the function and quality of interior environments. Coursework includes manual and computer-aided design (CAD) drawing, and commercial and residential planning.

Demand for interior designers is strongest in kitchen and bath design and remodeling, and in corporate and industrial facilities design.
